For over 80 years we have been building powerful partnerships for children, and we are active in over 75 countries. Plan international is seeking the services of a consultant to document success stories under the Strengthening Capacity of Disabled Persons Organisations (DPOs) project. The project seeks to promote inclusive dialogue and participation in governance projects being implemented in Manicaland, Midlands, Masvingo. The project is aimed at developing stronger internal governance and organizational support functions and ensuring they are credible and authentic voices of people with disabilities in Zimbabwe. This includes working innovatively to support capacity in implementing preparedness and response for humanitarian actions. In addition the project targets the grassroots structures of DPOs and this will include 900 youths with disabilities and 600 women with disabilities.

Purpose of the assignment
The purpose of this assignment is to collect, compile and produce outstanding success stories / case studies in all districts where the project is being implemented. The success stories / case studies should demonstrate the impact of the project and the contribution it has made to the 7 DPOs and their communities who are part of the project. The consultant is expected to conduct interviews and take photos within the Plan International Communications Guidelines and compile articles that will be used to produce a visual, engaging project magazine and an audio format of the documentation exercise that will benefit the visually impaired. A total of 15 stories are expected. The project participants have so far managed to develop nine stories which will act as leads for the consultant. The consultant will be expected to incorporate the donor’s visibility guidelines for both the magazine and the audio product to be suggested by the consultant. Both products must include the overview of the project that will be provided by Plan International.

Duties And Responsibilities


Scope of work
The consultant will develop structured questions for each story idea to be shared to Plan International Communications Specialist and the project team before field work commences. After compilation, the consultant will present a well-designed child and disability friendly magazine and audio. The magazine must be between 10-15 pages while the audio should not be more than 10mins.

Participant selection and recruitment
As a minimum requirement, representatives from key stakeholders (project team, project partners, other potential experts cooperating with the project team, e.g. public authorities, community leaders) and target groups should be given the opportunity to provide feedback on the project to the consultant(s).

Outputs and deliverables
The following deliverables are expected from the consultant: An concept note, outlining the key scope of the work and intended work plan of the analysis, and refinement of the documentation (interview) questions (technical proposal), shall be submitted after 5 days of commencing the consultancy; An inception meeting will also be conducted to deliberate and map the way forward. The evaluators will prepare an inception report which will outline the scope of work, intended work plan and production; Production of success stories and case studies in English language for both print (magazine) and audio; The consultant in her / his concept note should indicate how they are going to package success stories in audio format.; The story narrative should be written in a creative way which needs to be supported by the quality photos and stronger bites; The audio format should be packaged in a way that captures audience attention; Prepare a short narrative or profile before writing a full stories; Prepare a script for the audio product before final editing; Draft the stories and audio should be submitted for review before final editing; Incorporate the comments from Plan International Team; Submit the final version (Branded project magazine) including the photos with captions and a well packaged audio product; After completion of the exercise the consultant will give a presentation to Plan International Zimbabwe and its stakeholders.

Users of the documentation
Donor – the magazine will inform the donor about the project achievements and project values at completion of project, bringing out the human element and the transformation across project sites through the interventions; Plan and partners- these include project staff, program staff, management and administrative staff located in Bulawayo, Masvingo, Midlands and Manicaland provinces; Plan staff in other Country Offices in Plan countries and in National Offices (GNO); Partner communities in the Program Areas; Partner development organizations to improve programming at all levels–from policy to implementation levels thereby improving the quality of partnership with Plan; In addition, key stakeholders in Zimbabwe such as government line ministries / departments, NGOs, CSOs, local authorities and communities are interested parties

Qualifications And Experience

The assignment is expected to be undertaken within 15 working days.

Qualification and experience
The consultant team / individual should have at least 5 years of writing experience in story writing in a creative way for diverse audience; Experience in packaging success stories in audio format; Significant experience in writing, editing and documenting human interest stories for different level audience is prerequisite; Excellent knowledge, experiences and skills in editing and photography; A basic understanding of project implementation

Plan International is committed to ensuring that the rights of those participating in data collection or analysis are respected and protected, in accordance with Ethical MERL Framework and our Global Policy on Safeguarding Children and Young People. The applicants should include details in their proposal on how they will ensure ethics and child protection in the data collection process. Specifically, the consultant(s) shall explain how appropriate, safe, non-discriminatory participation of all stakeholders will be ensured and how special attention will be paid to the needs of children and other vulnerable groups. The consultant(s) shall also explain how confidentiality and anonymity of participants (where necessary) will be guaranteed. Personally Identifying information should also be well considered in instances where it will be utilized and appropriate consent be sought throughout the entire process.

Plan International invites expressions of interest from individuals and teams with the experience and skills to deliver the above to submit a Technical and Financial Proposal which includes the following and should clearly and specifically cover but not necessarily be limited to; Creativity: A proposed design and production approach demonstrating innovation and ingenuity; Capacity: Copies of CVs for the key staff for the proposal should be attached to the application; A detailed work plan, which must include clear timetable/ schedule of the work activities that will be performed; Samples: quality of samples of past work; A proposed budget.
